Reasons to be cheerful

The sun shone brightly as fixtures swung into action, helping to create a positive buzz amongst the pupils. The under 18s with Fremah as captain had an excellent start to their season, with a 29-22 win against Ludlow College. Undaunted by their tall defence, Amy-Rose and Isla (player of the match) established a solid partnership in the attacking circle, converting many goal scoring opportunities. Defensively, Penny, Fremah and Ava exerted pressure with some timely interceptions and well-timed defensive moves, whilst Liv, Scarlett and Maggie transitioned the ball at speed into the attacking circle.

Ludlow also brought a small badminton team and after ten well contested matches a 5-5 draw was a fair result.

The under 15s and under 13s began their season at Wigmore, with two solid performances. The under 15s flew out of the blocks, with Sophie (player of the match) unstoppable in the attacking circle. With seamless quarter time team changes, the girls maintained momentum, with some timely tips from Jess, Annabelle, Frankie and Eno in defence, quick moves through the centre court by Mia, Freya and Georgia and well-timed p[asses into the shooting circle, positive attacking play and well-earned 18-15 win.

The under 13s were equally successful, piling on the pressure from the start as Emi intercepted Wigmore’s first attacking move into the circle, enabling us to score and quickly gain a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Solid defending throughout by Pippy, Holly and Elsa, with calm centre court play by Isabel and Faith, ensure that Afia (player of the match) and Emilia had many goal scoring opportunities, which they duly converted for a 14-8 win.

For many girls, a trip to Bridge Street Astro Turf helped to hone hockey skills, with the under 12 girls growing in confidence throughout, they piled on the pressure in a friendly match against the Year 9s, securing a 2-2 draw an excellent warm up for their first hockey match next week.

The boys enjoyed an afternoon of rugby skills, drills and game play, making the most of the excellent coaching on offer from Mr. Goodchild, Mr. Helies, Mr. Wood and the support of a Luctonians coach.
